Mafia Slang: the Terms You Need to Know, from Beginner to Master
In a first game, many players get lost in words like 'lynch', 'claim' and 'steamroll'. Here is the glossary of terms every mafia player should know.
In mafia, knowing your role is not enough — you also need to understand the language of the table. Experienced players keep dropping words like 'claim', 'steamroll' or 'black', and a newcomer gets lost. Below is a glossary of the core terms every mafia player needs, from beginner to master.
General terms
- Lynch — when the town votes a player out during the day. It is both the main weapon and the town's biggest mistake.
- Check — when the detective learns a player's role at night (mafia or innocent).
- Foul — breaking the rules set by the host, such as talking or gesturing at night.
- Host (moderator) — the person who runs the game and announces night and day. Online, the software does it.
Day and night terms
- Night — the phase where the mafia, detective, doctor and other 'active' roles act in secret.
- Day — everyone wakes up, the night's result is announced and discussion begins.
- First night — usually the opening phase where no one dies or the mafia simply learn who each other are.
Strategy and bluff terms
- Claim — a player openly states their role (real or fake). For example: 'I am the detective'.
- Counter-claim — another player claims the same role; now the town must work out who is lying.
- Alibi — the reasoning a player uses to prove their innocence.
- Reveal — when the detective or another key role deliberately comes out.
- Steamroll — when a group of players push through the lynch of one person together.
Team and role terms
- Black — members of the mafia team.
- Red — the townsfolk and the entire town team.
- Neutral — roles that belong to no team and play only for themselves (maniac, suicide).
- Townsperson (vanilla) — a plain villager with no ability, but strong through their vote and logic.
Mafia Online terms
- Room — the virtual place a game runs in; you create it and invite friends by link.
- Bot — a smart computer player that fills a seat when there are not enough humans.
- VIP profile — a glowing frame, crown and animations; cosmetic only, it never affects the outcome.
- Mini App — the version of the game that opens right inside Telegram.
Knowing the terms is the first step. But a true master reads not the theory — they read the people at the table.
